This wine takes its name "Abderos" from the son of the god Hermes (Ερμή) from Opous (Οπούντα) in Locris (Λοκρίδας). According to Greek mythology, the demigod Heracles (Ηρακλής) built the city of Abdera (Αβδήρων) in Thrace (Θράκη) in memory of his friend Abderos (Αβδήρου), who was killed in the battle against the wild horses of Diomedes (Διομήδης), king of the Thracians. Characteristically, the label features the wild horse of Thrace.
Abderos Red is crafted from a blend of Greek grape varieties—Pamidi (Παμίδι), Limnio (Λημνιό)—and one French variety, Syrah. The result is a wine filled with a pleasant finish.
DRY RED P.G.I. ABDERA
(Note: P.G.I. stands for "Protected Geographical Indication" (Περιφέρεια Γεωγραφικής Εγγύησης in Greek), a European Union certification ensuring the wine’s quality and characteristics are tied to a specific geographic region and produced under traditional standards.)
Limnio (50%) / Syrah (30%) / Pamidi (20%)
(Note: Limnio and Pamidi are indigenous Greek red grape varieties; Limnio is known for its earthy and red fruit notes, while Pamidi adds softness and brightness.)
Vinification involves fermentation and extended maceration (14-19 days) of the Limnio and Syrah varieties in temperature-controlled anaerobic tanks. The wine is then aged in oak barrels (225L and 300L) for 10 to 12 months, which also includes malolactic fermentation. (Note: Malolactic fermentation converts the wine’s sharp malic acid into softer lactic acid, enhancing its smoothness.)
Each grape variety is vinified separately. After barrel aging, the final blend is created before bottling.
The vineyards are located in Abdera (Άβδηρος), at the southeastern tip of the P.G.I. zone.
